What is absorption cooling?
Absorption cooling uses thermal energy to generate cooling capacity. Like your refrigerator at home, cooling is generated by the transportation of warmth from the object to be cooled to the cooling installation. This attraction of warmth is effectuated by the expansion of gas in the cooling installation. For this expansion, a gas or liquid under pressure is needed. Therefore, the gas or liquid must first be compressed. This is where the absorption chiller works differently than a classic cooling installation. A classic cooling installation uses an electrical compressor, where the absorption chiller uses a “ thermal compressor”. As energy source heat is used, instead of electricity, which has several important advantages.
Applications of absorption cooling
Absorption cooling can be used for continuous cooling processes, where there is a heat source of >80°C available. It can also be used for cooling in production processes, air conditioning, and storage cooling for temperatures down to -25°C.
The used thermal energy can come from:
–Steam, exhaust gases, …
Heat from a cogeneration engine (CHP)
–Heat from exhaust gases
–Heat from engine block cooling
– High temperature sources
–Low temperature sources
– Unused biogas
– Direct fired gas applications
– Biomass combustion
District heating systems
This technology is particularly interesting for new buildings and in case of renovation, but perfectly suitable in combination with your existing cooling system.
- Optimal utilisation of consumed energy
- Saving primary energy
- Significantly lower electricity costs
- Reduction of CO2 emissions
- Low operational costs
Why absorption cooling?
Absorption cooling is the perfect solution for companies who need a lot of cooling and have an abundance of thermal energy. High efficiency and low operational costs are guaranteed by using (waste) heat and saving on primary energy.
