What is trigeneration?
Trigeneration is the simultaneous generation of power, heating and cooling using natural gas or biogas as fuel. A trigeneration installation couples a Combined Heat and Power (CHP a.k.a. cogeneration) engine with an absorption cooling system.
The CHP unit consists of a gas engine, which runs on biogas or natural gas, coupled to an electric generator. This produces electricity and releases heat at the same time. The heat is partially injected in the plant’s process heating circuit or the building’s CV system, and the rest or the heat is recuperated by the absorption cooling system.
The absorption cooling system consumes heat instead of electricity as its energy source, and uses a thermochemical compressor to generate cooling.
This energy efficiency installation has several significant benefits. Firstly it consumes less energy (and uses fuel much more efficiently) to generate heating, cooling and power (with practically no energy losses) and therefore reduces energy and production costs, rather than conventional methods where heating, cooling and power are produced separately and necessitate more energy input. Trigeneration systems also release more than 4 times less waste as separate productions, for generating the same amounts of heat, cooling and power. On top of this, trigeneration also generates electricity locally, which means there are no transmission or distribution losses. The owner of such an installation thus has a grid independent energy supply for his entire production process.
If the CHP engine is driven by biogas made on site from organic waste originating from the company’s production processes, this means that the entire trigeneration plant can be powered by free energy sources.
