Pharma Care installs solar panels backed-up with a battery

The problem faced

Pharma Care is a part of the Medical Supply company. The site of Pharma Care is a factory which produces pharmaceutical products like pills and serums.

Aside from the fact their processes are energy-intensive, they experience frequent black outs. These occur around 6 times per day and usually last 10-15 minutes (sometimes even up to 24 hours). Blackouts mean that Pharma Care is forced to temporarily stop production (down time) and seriously hinders their performance. On top of this restarting their engines and generators several times a day is even more energy intensive than if they were running smoothly all day.

The solution Upgrade Energy provided

To solve this issue Upgrade Energy has installed solar panels for cheap and on-site decentralised energy generation, in combination with a battery to store any unused energy as well as provide a back-up power for the priority production lines during black-outs.

How the installation works

This hybrid system (solar energy-grid-battery switching) generates 500 kWp of renewable energy for daytime consumption and can store up to 1 MWh of electricity. This storage capacity is used for continuous power during blackouts and synchronization of all generators.

They had an unoccupied roof on their factory which was perfect to install solar panels on – this way, no need to rent land nearby. The battery was also installed in close proximity to the main board in order to avoid any transmission and distribution losses.

The system has mitigated the influence of the grid and has enhanced the performance of the factory.

The battery has functioned well in the system:

  • Storing the excess solar energy
  • Providing electricity in the morning, the evening, at night, rainy days and while the grid fails.
  • In order to ensure constant power supply, the battery is also periodically charged from the grid to maintain a certain capacity level.
